A Little Something

So awhile back I was reading Poet's blog, (if you have not read it, you really ought to) and I noticed one very interesting post she made in which you get to meet your own characters.  I decided to write one for two of mine, but I did not know it was meant for you to meet them while Christmas shopping, so this ended up into just simply meeting them at some random point in time.
I want to note, however, that I am meeting these characters in modern times, because it seemed much easier this way, even though the book they are in is much more medieval.  Here it is:

I shivered as I ran down the street and into the candy shop.  I could nearly see my breath as the door closed behind me.
"Let's make this quick."  I muttered under my breath.  I ran down the isle, wondering which candies would be best for making a cupcake look like a squirrel, when I saw her out of the corner of my eye.
There, standing on her knees, was a rather tall girl.  Her hair was a strong red and her skin was a bit tanned, but most of all, she was tall.  About as tall as an average, full grown man.
She was staring at a gumball machine at the end of the isle, longingly, like she hadn't eaten in a week and she found a steak in a cage.  I couldn't help but stare.
She must have heard me, however, because she quickly looked at me and made a small jump, even though I was staring for some time.  She sighed, though, and smiled at me.
"Somethin' in my hair?"  She asked, acting much more relaxed then before.
"Ah, no.  I was just wondering why you were staring at that machine."  I said, pointing at it.  She had caught me off guard, so I wasn't sure what to do.
However, she laughed a a bit at this.  "Oh, that?  I was just wishing I could have one of them, to be honest, but Merle took all of the money, so I don't have enough."
"That so?"  I said, not expecting an answer, which of course she gave none, for she went back to staring at the machine.
Her dark brown eyes stared at it hopelessly, although the ring on her nose and her ruff clothes made her look less innocent and even more strange.
I sighed, thinking she was the one who was hopeless.  "I'll get you one then, but don't go asking for another one, or you'll get sick."  I said this while dropping a coin in it, popping out a red gumball.
Her eyes began to sparkle with joy as it fell in her hands, then stared at me as if I were a ray of light in the darkness.  She nearly pushed me to the ground as she jumped up and hugged me, crushing me from her tight hold.
"Thank you so much!  You are such a wonderful person!"  She squealed, as she popped the gumball into her mouth, and I somehow managed to get out of her grasp.  Even though I was still feeling a bit of pain from her odd hug, I couldn't help but laugh.
"Calm down!  It's just a gumball, after all."  I managed to control the laughter, but she was still smiling.
"You're just like Merle, though I wish he'd laugh and smile more like you do.  He's nice, but he'll never admit it."  She said this, giggling to herself.
    "Who's Mer-"
"Oye, Reid, what did I tell you about talking about me to strangers?"  I heard behind me.  I quickly looked behind me, startled.
It was a boy, about as tall as me, with dull black hair, nearly black eyes, and very pale skin.  He wore complete black clothes, looking a bit like death to me, and a bit annoyed.
"You're Merle?"  I asked, nervously.  He, most likely, could do nothing to me, sense he was rather small, but he still didn't seem like someone you'd want to mess with.  Plus, he was looking more annoyed, unlike Reid.
"He may not look it, but he's sixteen like me."  She said this, ignoring what Merle said, and walked over to him, hugging him.
I simply stared in shock.  They weren't even close to being the same size, yet they were the same age?
However, he was looking very annoyed now, and a bit embarrassed, seeing how his face was getting red. "You really should listen to me!  You know I don't like it when you talk about me, talk to strangers, and randomly hug me!  Reid, people are going to think I'm your child!"  He looked like he was going to explode.
Reid, however, was laughing as she walked Merle to the door.  "Calm down, calm down!  Is it so terrible to hug you?"
    "But-"
"Oh, thanks for the candy, Gumball!"  Reid yelled at me, cutting off Merle's rant, and ran out of the door, holding his hand.
I stood there in shock.  "What was that all about?"

I know it's not very good, but I'm happy with it.  Both of these characters are going to be in Morgen's Tale (still looking for a better name).
A terrible thing about making a book with a lot of characters is that you fall in love with all of the characters BUT the main character.  Grace has been rather annoyed and lonely by that fact, as have Hunter, Lacey, and Ivory.  I hope to soon start posting more about these characters.
